Postoperative complications of thoracic surgery: Their recognition
نویسنده
چکیده
Studies have shown that thoracic patients are more prone to complications of surgery, particularly those related to the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, than are patients undergoing surgery at other sites. Tarhan has documented a 29% incidence of myocardial reinfarction in patients undergoing thoracic surgery compared to an incidence of 8% reinfarction in patients undergoing upper abdominal surgery, and a 4% incidence in patients having surgery on other sites.1 The conclusions of this study are similar to those of other studies which have related an increase of pulmonary and other complications to thoracic surgery.2 Since many patients scheduled for thoracic surgery have a history of pulmonary disease such as bronchitis, emphysema, or cardiovascular disease, and since the age range of the patients undergoing thoracic surgery may be higher than that of patients having other types of surgery, it is probable that events other than the actual surgery may influence the incidence of complications. Many types of complications are noted following thoracic surgery. These include hypoventila-

Efficacy of Intraoperative, Single-Bolus Corticosteroid Dose to Prevent Postoperative Respiratory Complication after Transhiatal Esophagectomy
Introduction: Esophageal cancer is among the most common malignancies. Hospital mortality in the past decade reduced; but its morbidity is still high. Pulmonary complications are the most common complications after esophageal resection. In this study we examined the effect of steroids administration during surgery to reduce postoperative morbidity with a focus on respiratory complications.Mater...
متن کاملChanges in Blood Gases and Hemodynamic Parameters in Patients Undergoing Lung Resection Surgery and Its Clinical Implications
Introduction: Lung resection surgery is a challenge to thoracic surgeons. Outcome of surgery depends on patients’ tolerance to reduced lung volume and hemodynamic alterations. The present study aimed to investigate the changes in blood gases and hemodynamic parameters in patients undergoing lung resection surgery and the associated clinical implications. Materials and methods: This study includ...

PURPOSE To investigate if tests used in the preoperative period of upper abdominal or thoracic surgeries are able to differentiate the patients that presented cardiopulmonary postoperative complications. METHODS Seventy eight patients, 30 submitted to upper abdominal surgery and 48 to thoracic surgery were evaluated. Spirometry, respirometry, manovacuometry, six-minute walk test and stair-cli...
متن کاملVideo-assisted thoracic surgery complications
Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is a miniinvasive technique commonly applied worldwide. Indications for VATS are very broad and include the diagnosis of mediastinal, lung and pleural diseases, as well as large resection procedures such as pneumonectomy. The most frequent complication is prolonged postoperative air leak. The other significant complications are bleeding, infections, postop...

Little has been recently published about specific postoperative complications following thoracic surgery in the morbidly obese patient. Greater numbers of patients who are obese, morbidly obese, or supermorbidly obese are undergoing surgical procedures. Postoperative complications after thoracic surgery in these patients that can lead to increased morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospital sta...
